ABSTRACT

THE EFFECT OF LIUZIJUE EXERCISE ON %VEP-1, FEF25-75%, SYMPTOMS OF SHORTNESS OF BREATH USING THE BORG SCALE, SIX MINUTE WALKING TEST EXERCISE CAPACITY, COPD ASSESSMENT TEST QUESTIONNAIRE IN STABLE CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE PATIENTS

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease that causes irreversible damage to lung tissues. Rehabilitation therapy is known to reduce the symptoms of shortness of breath and improve lung function and quality of life for COPD patients with COPD. Liuzijue exercise is a rehabilitation method in China that is useful for COPD patients with COPD.
Method: The research design was quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design. The subjects of this study were 31 patients with COPD undergoing outpatient treatment at the UNS Hospital Pulmonary Clinic between February and March 2024. The control group (n=17) received standard therapy, whereas the treatment group (n=14) received standard therapy plus liuzijue exercises for 6 weeks. done at home. Subsequently, % VEP-1, FEF25-75% and six-minute walking distance were checked. The patient then completed the Borg Scale and COPD assessment test (CAT) questionnaire independently.
Results: In the treatment group, there was a significant increase in the mean %VEP-1 value (53.44 ± 19.53 to 63.43 ± 18.73; p = 0.021). In addition, the mean FEF value of 25-75% increased from 30.68 ± 29.51 to 30.36 ± 28.66 (p= 0.386). The mean value of the six-minute waling test increased from 240.71 ± 43.40 m to 257.14 ± 43.04 (p = 0.101). In the treatment group, a decrease in the mean COPD assessment test score was also found (10.57 ± 5.83 to 8.21 ± 5.49; p= 0.073). There was no significant difference in the BORG scale scores before and after treatment (p= 0.489).
Conclusion: Liuzijue training for 6 weeks in COPD patients is improving in increased of %VEP-1, FEF25-75, and six-minute walking distance, and reduced CAT scores. However, it did not reduce the symptoms of shortness of breath.
