ABSTRACT

The thesis entitled "Studi Resepsi Penonton Terhadap Representasi Ambisi Dalam Film “The Seagull” 2018" focuses on three things, namely, how the audience interprets ambition in the context of Indonesian women to prioritize career over the household, how the audience's perspective regarding career and household is represented in the representation of characters in the 2018 film The Seagull, and why audiences criticize or accept the condition of 21st-century women through the representation of female characters 19th century in the 2018 film The Seagull. This research is included in reception studies media studies and ethnographic studies of audiences. The theory used is Stuart Hall's reception theory. This research uses a qualitative descriptive research method and uses focus group discussions, interviews, and document studies as data collection methods. The data analysis technique in this research was carried out interactively and continued continuously until a conclusion was reached. The data sources used are primary and secondary. The results of this research show that Indonesian audiences interpret ambition positively in the context of women who prioritize careers. The representation of the characters in the film The Seagull 2018 represents the audience who has the ambition to achieve what they dream of both in terms of career and household. The audience's response to the film can be seen as an attempt to articulate the trend for women to 'keep single' or 'childfree marriage' because they prefer a career.
