Analysis of Translation of Speech Acts of Thanking in Percy Jackson and The Olympians Novel Series

The objectives of this research are: (i) to determine the functions of speech acts of thanking in Percy Jackson and The Olympians novel series, (ii) to examine the translation techniques employed to render these speech acts of thanking, and (iii) to assess the impact of the chosen translation techniques on the quality of the translated speech acts of thanking. The data for this research were sourced from two primary sources: (a) the five novels of the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series along with their Indonesian translations, and (b) raters who assessed the quality of these translations. The data collection was carried out using content analysis and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). In total, 106 speech acts of thanking were identified across the five novels. These expressions were analyzed using Spradley's data analysis method, which comprises three phases: domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, and componential analysis, followed by cultural theme analysis. The analysis of the function of speech acts of thanking has shown six functions using the theory from Aijmer (1996): (i) acknowledging a major favor, (ii) acknowledging a favor, (iii) making the hearer feel good, (iv) accepting an offer/promise, (v) refusing a burden, and expressing irony, (vi) sarcasm, or brusqueness.The speech acts of thanking are translated using combinations of translation techniques, with a total of 31 types of combinations. The most dominant technique found is the established equivalent technique.The majority of the translations of the speech acts of thanking are considered accurate.No inaccurate translations were found, but 15 data points are considered less accurate due to a slightly different message and reduction of the messages resulting from literal translation, discursive creation, and reduction translation techniques.The majority of the translations of the speech acts of thanking are considered acceptable, although a small number (20%) are less acceptable. The less acceptable data result from the pure borrowing technique, which causes the translation to contain words that are not commonly used in Indonesian culture for performing speech acts of thanking. This study shows the varied functions of speecha acts of thanking in Percy Jackson and The Olympians series and the techniques used to translate them into Indonesian. While most translations are accurate and acceptable, some lose accuracy and acceptability due to certain translation techniques. The findings emphasize the need for appropriate translation techniques to maintain the nuanced meanings and quality of the expressions.
