An Appraisal Theory Perspective of Joy and Sadness' Emotional Shift in Inside Out Movie

This research is undertaken to analyzes the progression of the characterization of Joy and Sadness in the movie Inside Out. This research intends to (1) find the types of affects used by the character Joy and Sadness in Inside Out movie (2) divine the characterization of Joy and Sadness according to the use of affect in Inside Out movie, (3) elaborate the emotional shift of Joy and Sadness from the orientation, complication, evaluation, and resolution according to the use of affect in Inside Out movie. This research adopts the use of a qualitative paradigm with the characteristic of a qualitative descriptive paradigm. The location of the research. As the data would be collected primarily from the stages of Inside Out movie by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney (2015), accordingly with the definition of primary data is when the data gathered directly from the research site by the researcher. From the findings, the researcher collected a total of 160 data from this movie. The biggest number of data coming from inclination: desire then followed with the same amount of unhappiness: misery, security: confidence and dissatisfaction: displeasure. Joy has a total of 97 affects, while Sadness has fewer affects with a total of 53 data. The character Joy depicts the happy feelings in Riley by her usage of happiness: cheer dominating. Meanwhile, Sadness embraces the gloomy feelings in Riley resulting her affect dominated by unhappiness: misery. Throughout the movie, the character Joy is experiencing emotional changes from the variety of affect that she used. That comes to make Joy fits to be a dynamic character of this movie. In contrast, the character Sadness has almost the same types of affect that makes her a static character of this movie.
