The purpose of this research was to examine the gender representation in an
English textbook entitled My Next Words for Fourth Grade Students which was
released by the Government in 2021, in addition there were the opinions of
learners on gender equality. This research used Porecca's (1984) framework to
examine female and male representation in this English textbook, namely:
omission (the proportion of females to males in visual and textual), firstness,
occupational visibility, noun, masculine generic construction, and adjective.
Gender omission is not excessive, with an average female-to-male ratio of 1:1.03.
The versions of firstness, occupation, noun, and masculine generic for males
differ from those for females. Some prejudices were discovered, such as cooking
being a female activity and male being the breadwinners. The study's restriction is
that it only examines one textbook. As a result, this study's findings cannot be
generalized. Another research with a bigger sample size would be required to
conduct a more in-depth investigation of the English Foreign Language textbook's
visual.
