Writing has consequences across the curriculum at all academic levels and has an impact on students’ academic success in a variety of subject areas. There are some problems and experienced difficulties with the academic writing of fifth- semester students in Surakarta. Specifically, this paper focuses on problems faced by students and what factors make them successful in academic writing class. This paper explores the academic writing experiences of fifth-semester students of the English Education Department (EED) at the University of Surakarta. The data presentation and analysis are based on qualitative research from questionnaires and interviews with the participants. The participants were 12 EED students (fifth- semester students) to fill the questionnaires and then selected four students to do interviews. It was found that there are three problems that faced by students in academic writing class: grammar, formal writing style, and evaluating relevant sources. Then, the factors students’ successful in academic writing are divided into internal factors (knowledge and motivation) and external factors (lecturer’s review, peer feedback, the use of AI, and deadline).
