Analysis of Translation of Idioms in the Novel “TWISTED LOVE” By Ana Huang

The objectives of this research are: (1) To identify the types of idioms used in the novel “Twisted Love” by Ana Huang from chapter 1 to chapter 12. (2) To identify the translation strategies used in the translation of idioms in the novel “Twisted Love” by Ana Huang from chapter 1 to chapter 12. (3) To evaluate the influence of the translation strategies on the quality of the translation of idioms in the novel “Twisted Love” by Ana Huang in terms of accuracy, readability, and acceptability from chapter 1 to chapter 12.

            This Research category is embedded case research. The methodology used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach with a single case research design. This research is conducted using two types of data, namely primary data and secondary data. The main data are idiom types, translation strategies, and information on translation quality in the novel “Twisted Love” by Ana Huang from chapter 1 to chapter 12. The secondary data are books, previous studies, and internet sources which are relevant to this research. The sampling technique used in this research is random sampling. The data collection methods used in this research are FGD (Focus Group Discussion) and content analysis.

            From this research, the results obtained are: (1) The common type of idiom found in the novel “Twisted Love” by Ana Huang from chapter 1 to chapter 12 is phrasal verbs (42.72%). (2) The most frequently used translation strategies in translating idioms found in the novel “Twisted Love” by Ana Huang from chapter 1 to chapter 12 is translation by paraphrase (67.96). (3) For the quality of translation in the novel “Twisted Love” by Ana Huang from chapter 1 to chapter 12 are considered accurate (84.87%) with 2,7 rate, acceptable (85.44%) with 2,7 rate, and readable (91.26%) with 2,9 rate. Translation strategies which positively influenced the translation quality are translation using an idiom of similar meaning and form, translation using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, and translation by paraphrase Meanwhile, translation strategies which negatively influenced the translation quality are borrowing idioms from the source language, and literal translation.
