By utilizing Martin & Rose’s (2003) appraisal framework, the study aims to explore the role and function of attitude in the narrative, particularly the types of Affect employed by both protagonist and antagonist characters. This study also describes the characterization of Ghosts based on the types of Affect displayed by the characters. Additionally, it examines how the development of characters through the stages from orientation to resolution, with a specific focus on the Affect types used by each character. This study focuses on an in-depth analysis of a single case, examining only one type of novel. The characters' characterizations are analysed using socio-semiotic techniques. With this method, Affect data can define the characters of ghosts that are present in each phase. The findings reveal the most frequent Affect type is Disinclination: Fear, which plays a crucial role in establishing the novel’s tense atmosphere. By offering a detailed analysis, this research provides valuable insights into how evaluation shapes characterizations. It is expected that these findings serve as a useful reference for future studies on attitude analysis, contributing to a deeper understanding of narrative evaluation.
