ABSTRACT Tannia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott) is one of the tropical root crops that can be optimally grown to fullfil the world’s needed of food. Tannia’s tuber is a source of carbohydrate can be use as an alternative to rice. The aims of the study was to know the growth, nitrogen content and nitrate reductase activity of tannia (Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott) in different shadding and water availability. The research done in randomize complete block design with two factors and three replicates. The first factor was shading in 3 levels (N0= 0%, N1= 55%, N2= 75%), the other factor was water availability in % field capacity (KL) (A1= 40%KL, A2= 60%KL, A3= 80%KL and A4= 100%KL). The treatments done in 45 days. The growth parameters observed were plant height, dry biomass, shoot-root ratio, nitrogen content and nitrate reductase activity. The data obtained were analyzed by General Linear Model Univariate followed by DMRT in 5% confident level. The result showed that the combinations of shading and water availability, significantly affected the plant height, shoot-root ratio, nitrogen content and nitrate reductase activity of tannia, but the dry biomass didn’t. The highest growth shown by 75% shading and 100% water availability plant (87,25 cm). The highest shoot-root ratio shown by 55% shading and 80% water availability plant (0,41g). The highest nitrogen content shown by 75% shading and 60% water availability plant (4,15%). The highest nitrate reductase activity shown by 55% shading and 100% water availability plant (161,11 µmol NO2 - /g/jam). Keywords : Xanthosoma sagittifolium, shading, water availability, growth, nitrogen content, nitrate reductase activity
