Keywords : angled loofah, Luffa acutangula Roxb., antioxidant activity, phenolic, flavonoid This study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant activity, chemical components, and phenolic and flavonoid contents in angled loofah extracts. The extracts were prepared by maceration using methanol solvent. The methanol extract then extracted using hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and buthanol solvents. The antioxidant activity of extracts were determined using modification of β-carotene-linoleic acid emulsion method. The antioxidant activities were compared to those of the synthetic antioxidant, BHT (Buthylated Hydroxy Toluene) and PG (Prophyl Gallat). The extracts were investigated regarding their composition using different colorimetric techniques. Folin ciocalteau method was used to measure the phenolic contents and the flavonoid contents were determined using AlCl3 reagent. The results showed that antioxidant activity of methanol extract was lower than BHT and PG. Hexane extract had the highest antioxidant activity, followed by chloroform, ethyl acetate, buthanol, and aqueous extracts, respectively. Antioxidant activity of hexane and chloroform extracts was higher than the BHT and PG. The phytochemical screenings showed hexane extract only had carotenoid compound. Chloroform extract contained carotenoids, phenolics, flavonoids, and condensed tannins compounds. Ethyl acetate, buthanol and aqueous extracs composed phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin compounds. Ethyl acetate extract had the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents. The antioxidant activity was not correlated with phenolic content (R2=0,577, P>0,05) and flavonoid content (R2=0,638, P>0,05) significantly. This study showed that angled loofah extracts could be used as a source of natural antioxidants.
