The research of antibacterial activity of snake gourd (Trichosanthes
anguina L.) extract against pathogenic bacteria have been done. The extracts of
snake gourd were prepared by maceration using methanol and then continued
using organic solvent with increasing polarity; hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate,
and buthanol, respectively. The antibacterial activity of extracts were determined
using diffusion method. Compound analysis of active antibacterial extract was
conducted by phytochemical screening. The composition of the highest active
extract was investigated using Thin Layer Chromatography, then the minimum
inhibitory concentration (MIC) and equivalent value were evaluated. The
equivalent value was compared to ampisilin.
The result of this research showed that methanol, chloroform and ethyl
acetate extracts of snake gourd had antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli,
Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but did
not inhibit Salmonella typhii, Shigella dysentriae, and Enterobacter aerogenes.
Hexane extract gave an inhibition against E. coli and B. subtilis whereas buthanol
extract had antibacterial activity against E. coli, B. subtilis and P. aeruginosa.
Chloroform extract had the highest antibacterial activity against S. aureus and P.
aeruginosa. The phytochemical screenings analysis showed that active extracts
contained alkaloids, tannins, phenolics, flavonoids, and terpenoids compounds.
TLC of chloroform extract showed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, tannins,
phenolics, flavonoids, and terpenoids. MIC of chloroform extract against S.
aureus and P. aeruginosa were 0,0025 mg/μL and 0,00125 mg/μL, respectively.
Activity of 0,01 mg/μL chloroform extract compared to ampisilin standard was
equal to 2,789.10-6
mg/μL and 2,958.10-5
mg/μL ampisilin for S. aureus and P.
aeruginosa, respectively.
