This study leads to understanding the use of social media as an English learning for Indonesian EFL learners. As a popular platform offering many features, Instagram has become an interactive platform for applying English language learning. By focusing on Instagram features and EFL learners’ experiences of learning and using English on Instagram, this study examines how Instagram features help EFL learners learn English and how EFL learners practically use English on Instagram.
This study is qualitative research with a case study design. This study’s participants are three Indonesians aged 15 to 24 who are active Instagram users engaged in autonomous language learning. The study used observations, semi-structured interviews, and content analysis to collect EFL learners’ experiences of learning and practically using English on Instagram. The data collected was then analyzed using the thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke.
Instagram features helped EFL learners learn and practice their English. Instagram features helped EFL learners learn English through several activities, including following English learning accounts, joining the broadcast channel of the English learning community, and watching English learning content on FYP’s “For You Page.” EFL learners practically used English on Instagram through several activities, including creating English-related content, writing English as a caption, and engaging in English interactions.
