The Portrayal of Hegemony of Capitalism Represented In

This research aims to analyze the portrayal of hegemony practiced in They Live a film by John Carpenter.The research concerned with the practice of hegemony that occurs within the film. Theory of hegemony is used to analyze the film, using a semiotic approach of the film including characterization, plot narrative and scenes which elaborated with the concept of hegemony. The technique analysis of this research is done by several stages which are data screenshot, transcribe of dialogue and data categorization. The primary data used are films in forms of scenes and transcribe dialogue and journals and articles are the secondary data. The result revealed that in the film They Live, the practice of hegemony occurs in society by the aliens disguised as powerful rich people and the revolutionary resistant movement people. There are practices of coercive and persuasive domination represented by groups of classes in the film. The aliens dominate through the state apparatus power, namely police forces, they manifest their hegemony by violence in order to control the opposition which is represented by the revolutionary movement. The persuasive or ‘consent in Antonio Gramsci’s theory also found in the strategy of domination by both of the groups. They perform domination through intellectual leadership and media propaganda in order to achieve ‘consent’ of the masses.
