Translation Analysis of Indonesian Cultural Terms in A Space for the Unbound Video Game

This research aims to analyze the translation techniques applied to translate the Indonesian cultural terms in A Space for the Unbound video game and how they affect the translation quality in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability.

This research applied a descriptive qualitative research method. The sources of data are documents and informants. The data were collected using three methods: content analysis, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and interview. 158 sentences containing Indonesian cultural terms were found through the content analysis. Three raters, including the researcher, discussed the translation techniques and quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability in the FGD. The interviews were to assess the readability aspect of the translation.

The result of this research shows that four types of cultural terms were identified in the game: Ecology; Material Culture; Social Culture; and Organizations, Customs, and Ideas type. The translation techniques used are Pure Borrowing (58 data), Established Equivalent (38 data), Generalization (25 data), Adaptation (10 data), Modulation (9 data), Particularization (4 data), Pure Borrowing + Description (4 data), Discursive Creation (3 data), Reduction (2 data), Pure Borrowing + Discursive Creation (2 data), Pure Borrowing + Adaptation (1 datum), Literal Translation (1 datum), and Pure Borrowing + Established Equivalent (1 datum). Regarding the translation quality in terms of accuracy, 112 (70.89%) are valued as accurate, 43 (27.21%) are less accurate, and 3 (1.9%) are inaccurate. In terms of acceptability, 89 (56.33%) are considered acceptable, 8 (5.06%) are less acceptable, and 61 (38.61%) are unacceptable. In terms of readability, 98 (62.03%) are considered to have high readability levels, 56 (35.44%) to have medium readability levels, and 4 (2.53%) to have low readability levels. Overall, the average score of accuracy was considered high (2.69 out of 3), acceptability medium (2.18 out of 3), and readability high (2.6 out of 3).
