ABSTRACT Objective: Together with increasing interest in patient with COPD and asthma, many researchers presume there is correlation between COPD and asthma with serum calcium concentrations which occur decreasing of serum calcium concentrations. Low serum calcium concentrations is begining process of bone demineralization that can cause bone loss. However, whether there are differences of serum calcium concentrations between COPD and asthma are not yet known. This research purpose to show whether there is differences of serum calcium concentrations between COPD and asthma. Methods: Observational analytic research by using cross sectional. The subjects are geriatric COPD patients and asthma in RSUD Dr. Moewardi. Samples size are 30 patients with consecutive (quota) sampling used, consist of 15 geriatric COPD patients and 15 geriatric asthma patients. Their serum calcium concentrations is measured and then analysed with difference two average test (Independent sample t test). Results: The result of independent t test is known that sig. 0.005 or probability under 0.05 ( p < 0.05). With the result that H0 is refused or serum calcium concentrations in geriatric COPD patients different with serum calcium concentrations in geriatric asthma patients. Conclusion: There is significant differences of serum calcium concentrations between geriatric COPD patients and ashma which in geriatric COPD patients concentration of serum calcium is lower than geriatric asthma patients. Low serum calcium concentrations is marker for osteoporosis.
