This research is design to know: 1) how visual thinking could help to develop students’ ideas in writing narrative text, 2) the students’ perception of using visual thinking for generating ideas in writing narrative text, 3) the difficulties of using visual thinking for developing a students’ writing skills in narrative text. This study utilized a qualitative research method with a case study approach. Qualitative method enable researcher to collect rich and detailed data on individuals’ experiences, perceptions, and feelings. Data were collected through writing activity, questionnaire, and interview. The study involved 20 students from class XII B5 at one of Senior High School in Karanganyar, Central Java, as participants. The researcher using perception component CAC model by (Schiffman & Kanuk, 2004). The findings of this study indicate: 1) using visual thinking, students grades show a fairly satisfying result, the average students gets grades at the middle level in the activity of writing narrative text which is 74.75 or 65% from the whole class, 2) There are three aspects of perception. First, student cognitive responses. 80% of students understand visual thinking and are used to using it when studying so that they have a positive view of this method. As many as 90% students also have an expectation of visual thinking to help them. In affective perception aspect, 90% students also motivated to keep using visual thinking as a method for them to generate their ideas. They have positive feeling such as feeling of pleasure. But, there is a small number of students who think that visual thinking is still unsuitable with their study behaviors. In conative perception aspect, 70% of students want to continue using visual thinking for generating ideas but there are so few students who want to use their own method, 3) Students have difficulty organizing ideas in their imagination and making it a real visual form. Second, some students claimed to have difficulty in drawing skills, so that despite having a lot of ideas, what they thought was not completely conveyed.
