ABSTRACT
Sepsis can be caused by delayed apoptosis of neutrophil. Curcumin as an
antiinflammatory agent plays role to enhance neutrophil apoptosis. This research
is aimed to investigate the effect of curcumin on pheripheral blood neutrophil
count in sepsis condition.
This was a pure experimental research with post test only control group
design. We used 27 male Balb/C mice, 15-30 grams weight, and 4-6 weeks old.
They were divided into 3 groups, 9 mice on each group. The groups were control,
sepsis model, and sepsis model administered with 1.6 mg curcumin orally. The
sepsis model was induced by cecal inoculum 4 mg intraperitoneally. Subjects
were treated from day 1 to day 7. On day 8, blood samples were collected from
the orbital sinus. Blood neutrophil count was determined by computerization.
Statistical analysis was performed by One-Way ANOVA followed by Fisher’s
Least Significant Difference (LSD) using SPSS for Windows Release 17.0.
Differences were considered significant when p<0.05.
The data showed that percentage of neutrophil count of control group
(20.86±12.63) %, sepsis (19.44±16.24) %, and sepsis+curcumin (23.63±19.94) %.
There is no significant difference between groups (p=0.828).
From this research we concluded that there is no effect of curcumin on
pheripheral blood neutrophil count in Balb/C mice model of sepsis induced by
cecal inoculum.
