A comparative study of register, genre and ideology between news related to the indonesia’s election credibility reported on Indonesia this morning and in The jakarta post (a study based on systemic functional linguistics)

ABSTRACT This is a qualitative descriptive and comparative research of news text based on Systemic Functional Linguistics. The problem statements of the research are (1) How is the register system applied in each text in news reported on Indonesia This Morning Program and in The Jakarta Post? (2) What is the genre applied in each text in news reported on Indonesia This Morning Program and in The Jakarta Post? (3) What is the ideology applied in each text in news reported on Indonesia This Morning Program and in The Jakarta Post? (4) What are the similarities and differences of each text in news reported on Indonesia This Morning Program and in The Jakarta Post?. The objective of the research is to describe and compare the register, genre and ideology of both texts. The research was conducted by analysing the data based on lexicogrammar, cohesion system and text structure analysis, interpreting the register, genre and ideology, and finally comparing the analysis result of both texts to find their similarities and differences. The register analysis is composed of three aspects, namely field, tenor and mode. The interpretation of field shows that both texts have the same function to report the issue of Indonesia’s election credibility. From the analysis of tenor, it can be interpreted that the status between the writer and the audience or reader of both texts is equal. The judgment of the writer of both texts towards the audience or reader is neutral. Moreover, the degree of familiarity and readability of text 1 is higher than text 2. The mode interpretation reveals that both texts have written style. The medium of both texts are also appropriate with the content and text structure characteristic of the texts. Both texts employs recount genre. It is supported by the employment of dominant Attributive Relational Process and Material Process. In addition, the using of indicative; declarative; proposition Mood system strengthens it. However, the text structure of both texts are different. Text 1 consists of 2 events, while text 2 consists of orientation and 17 events. The ideology analysis reveals that both texts have left protagonist ideology. It is because the writers of both texts write the texts to report an issue and have power to gain In conclusion, having written the thesis, it is recommended that the writer of news texts simplify the news text in order to avoid misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the readers towards the issue reported.
