ABSTRACT This research is done based on tattoo phenomenon in a society from the ancient times until now. Many ethnics group traditionally think that tattoo is an important thing of their ritual life in their culture, so some make tattoo as their social identities, belief, trend fashion, and so on. In Indonesia it self there is a time which tattoos is considered as a bad thing. People, who use tattoo, are judged that it is related to criminal, gang of street toughs, and roué. Especially, group of people who live in a street is always considered as a disturber of the peace in community. Those bad interpretations indirectly get legalization in 1980s when there is an embellishment for thousand racke and criminal in some cities in Indonesia. This embellishment is usually called by petrus (mysterious shooter). The purpose of this research is to know the internal and external factors which cause the tattooist tattooing their body, to analyze the meaning of tattoo for tattooist in Jebres village, Jebres district, Surakarta. This research uses descriptive qualitative approximation. The sources of data that are used in this research are respondent, research dislocation, and document and achieves. The techniques of data collection are observation, interview and documentation. The sample used in this research is done by purposive sampling. The data validity used in this research is source of triangulation and method of triangulation. Data analysis used by interactive analysis model which include data collective, data reduction, data representation, and drawing the conclusion become the activities groove that happen in the same time and as a process of cycle and interactive. The theory which is used is that symbolic interactions. The result of this research shows that the internal factors cause of the tattooist tattoo their body is because they want to try or do for fun, to immortalize the special moment in their live, looking for the attention and as an accessory. Whereas, the external factors such as because of solidary, getting influence from their friends, and because of trend or mode. The meaning of tattoo for tattooist is show that it expresses their thought, as an art expression and artistic, identities, release their problems and as a spiritual (belief).
