The Use Of Picture Series To Improve Students’ Ability In Writing Recount Texts (A Classroom Action Research On The Eight Grade Of Smp N 3 Kartasura In 2009/2010 Academic Year)

The objective of the research is to examine whether or not the use of picture series can improve the students’ ability in writing recount text. Besides, theresearch is also designed to study how the picture series can be implemented effectively and how is the students’ response when it is implemented. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 3 Kartasura from March 2010 to July 2010. This study is a classroom action research which consists of four stages: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of the research are thirty five students of class VIII-E SMPN 3 Kartasura, consisting of 22 boys and 13 girls. The data were obtained from several techniques including test, observation, interview, questionnaire, and document analysis. To analyze the quantitative data, the researcher applied a descriptive statistics. To analyze the qualitative data, the researcher applied constant comparative method. The findings reveal that the implementation of picture series is successful viewed from some dimensions. It improves (1) students’ ability in writing recounttext; (2) teaching and learning situation; and (3) students’ personal competence. The research findings of this study imply that picture series is very important to improve students’ ability in writing recount text. Therefore, it is recommended that (1) the English teacher should apply picture series in order to provide good teaching learning situation; (2) the students should have more practice in writing;and (3) the institution should prepare place where the students feel comfortable inthe teaching learning process.
