This research is intended to know three important things: Firstly, whether Project-Based Learning is more effective than Guided Writing in teaching students writing ability. Secondly, whether the students who have positive language attitude toward English have better writing ability than those who have negative language attitude toward English. Thirdly, whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and language attitude in teaching writing. The research method is an experimental study. There are two kinds of teaching method used in this research: project-based learning and guided writing method. The language attitude as an attributive variable is divided into positive (favorable) and negative (unfavorable) language attitude. This research was conducted in MTsN Gondang Rejo, Karanganyar. The population of this research was the first grade students of MTsN Gondang Rejo Karanganyar in the academic year of 2009/2010. The writer used cluster random sampling to get the sample. There were 36 students equally distributed into four groups. The techniques of collecting the data were non test (a questionnaire) and a test (a writing test). The questionnaire consisted of 44 items and an essay test of writing test. The first instrument was valid and reliable and the second one was readable after both were tried out. The data were the result of writing test and analyzed by multifactor analysis of variance 2 x 2. Then, it was analyzed by using Tukey test to determine which methods and attributed variables are better or more effective. Based on the result of inferential analysis of the data, this research comes to some conclusions: (1) Project-based learning method is more effective than guided-writing method for teaching writing to the first grade students of MTsN Gondang Rejo in the academic year of 2009/2010; (2) The students who have positive language attitude have better writing achievement than the students who have negative language attitude of the first grade students of MTsN Gondang Rejo in the academic year of 2009/2010; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ language attitude in teaching writing to the first grade students of MTsN Gondang Rejo in the academic year of 2009/2010. The research shows that the effect of teaching method depends on the degree of language attitude. Project-based learning method is more effective than guided-writing method for teaching writing to the students who have positive language attitude. Guided-writing method is more effective than project-based learning method for teaching writing to the students who have negative language attitude. Hopefully, the result of this research will be something important for teachers in order to choose and determine the suitable teaching method used in their class.
