Improving students’ reading comprehension by using collaborative strategic reading (csr) (a classroom action research conducted at the eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta in the 2009/2010 academic year)

The objectives of this research are: 1) to explain whether Collaborative Strategic Reading improved reading comprehension, 2) To explain to what extent Collaborative Strategic Reading can improve the students reading comprehension, 3) To describe the response of the students towards the implementation of Collaborative Strategic Reading. The researcher conducted this classroom action research from February 2010 to May 2010 to the eleventh grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta. There were 42 students as the subject. In this research, the researcher taught reading by using Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR). She took the reading text from the textbook entitled Look Ahead and CnS Magazines containing many kinds of reading texts which are appropriate to the material presented in the curriculum. The researcher conducted two cycles of action. The result of the action showed that the students’ reading comprehension improve as shown in the result of both the observation of the students’ activities during the actions and their pre-test and post-test mean scores. The pre-test mean score was 4.85 increased to 5.67 in the post-test. So, it can be concluded that teaching reading by using Collaborative Strategic Reading which consists of steps; preview, click and clunk, get the gist and wrap-up can overcome the students’ problems in comprehending the target texts effectively. In addition, Collaborative Strategic Reading can also increase students’ vocabulary, enhance their cooperative and enrich their content area learning.
