The objectives of this research are to: (1) identify whether and to what extent filmstrip can improve the students’ speaking competence; and (2) identify the class situation of the speaking class when filmstrip is implemented. The research methodology applied in this research is action research with two cycles in which each cycle is divided into four stages such as planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. There are two kinds of data namely qualitative data and quantitative data. Qualitative data are taken from observation, interview, and questionnaire. The quantitative data are taken from the pre-test in the preresearch, post-test in cycle 1 and post-test in cycle 2. The qualitative data are analyzed by using Constant Comparative Method and the quantitative data are analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The use of filmstrip in the teaching of speaking can improve the students’ speaking competence. It could be seen in the following indicators: (1) increase the students’ vocabulary mastery; (2) improve the students’ pronunciation to be relatively accepted; (3) improve the students’ grammar; (4) increase the students’ fluency; (5) increase the students’ ability to use content correctly. Furthermore, the use of filmstrip is able to: (1) decrease the students’ noise in the classroom; (2) encourage the students to do the exercises during the lesson; (3) activate the students to respond the teacher in English; (4) develop the students’ ability to make an English speech in relatively shorter time; (5) activate the students to do homework. In addition, based on the data, the use of filmstrip can increase the students’ score from the pre-test to the post-test of cycle 1 and the post-test of cycle 2. The mean score of the pre-test was 52.22, while the mean score of posttest in cycle 1 was 59.45, and the mean score of post test in cycle 2 was 70.28. The minimum score (KKM) in English is 65. So the score of post-test in cycle 2 was higher than the minimum score (KKM). The use of filmstrip in the teaching of speaking has succeeded to improve and increase the students’ speaking competence. In line with it, I would like to give some suggestions to the English teachers especially those who teach in the junior high school such as: (1) to apply filmstrip in the teaching of English especially in speaking; (2) to increase their knowledge about visual media especially filmstrip; (3) to provide the students with more chance to practice speaking.
