The Myth Of American Technology As Savior And Protector Reflected In “Command And Conquer: Generals” (A Personal Computer Game)

This research aims to explain how the myth of American technology as savior and protector is reflected in this game. The research is descriptive qualitative research of which the source of data is the game Command and Conquer: Generals directed by Joseph D. Kucan. The main data of the research are description of the weapons, camera angles, and prologues. The supporting data of this research are taken from articles and reviews about the game from the internet. The research is in the scope of American studies which is an interdisciplinary study. Therefore, the research involves some disciplines which in this case are applied in the form of theories and approaches. In answering the research question, the researcher uses popular culture theory, semiotic film theory seen from historical approach and socio-political approach. Based on the data analysis, the researcher draws conclusion as follows: Command and Conquer: Generals shows that the myth of American technology as savior and protector is important for American social life especially its military technology. America will always do the best to protect and save the people of America. America develops new weapon system to ensure the safety of American people. America as the super power country always tries to save the global peace from the existence of terrorist. Using its advanced military technology, it can defeat the terrorist organization easily. Through their mission in destroying the GLA, the United States of American shows the myth of American technology as savior and protector. In addition, the myth of American technology as savior and protector in this game can be revealed from the plot, description of the weapons, camera angle, and prologues.
