The purposes of this study are to describe the types and the techniques of translating riddles and to discuss the quality of the translation in terms of the accuracy and readability. The analysis of the data is conducted by 2 approaches. The first is descriptive qualitative approach in which the data applied in this research are all riddles in the source books (24 riddles). The sources of data of the research are children science books; they are “At Home with Science – Splish! Splosh! Why Do We Wash?” and its translation ”Di Rumahku Ada Sains – Cebur! Cebur! Dicuci dan Diguyur!”(referred as book 1) and “At Home With Science – Bhump! Thump! How Do We Jump?” and its translation ”Toing! Toing! Bagaimana Lompatannya Tinggi Melenting?”(referred as book 2). The second is a simple quantitative approach which is done by finding the mean of the accuracy and readability of the translations. The quantitative approach is gained through the information and questionnaire distributed to three raters and five children.
The results of the analysis on the types of riddles show that there are three types of riddles found in the data, they are phonological riddle, semantic riddle, and syntactic riddle. In book 1, syntactic riddle is the most dominant type which amounts to 7 data (58.33%). Coming at the second place is semantic riddle with 4
data (33.33%). Phonological riddle is in the third place with 1 datum (8.33%). Similar to the previous book, there are three types of riddle found in book 2, they are phonological riddle, semantic riddle, and syntactic riddle. The most dominant type is syntactic riddle which amounts to 8 data (66.66%). The second place is phonological riddle with 3 data (25%). The last type is semantic riddle with 1 datum (8.33%). The results of the analysis on the translation techniques show that in book 1 there are 4 translation techniques found. They are 4 riddles (33.33%) considered to be translating riddle into riddle with the same question and same answer, 1 datum (8.33%) considered to be translating riddle into riddle with the same question but different answer, 1 datum (8.33%) is translating riddle into riddle with the different question but same answer, and 6 data (50%) considered to be translating riddle into riddle with the different question and different answer. In book 2, there are 3 translation techniques found. They are 4 riddles (33.33%) considered to be translating riddle into riddle with the same question and same answer, 2 data (16.66%) is translating riddle into riddle with the same question but different answer, and 6 data (50%) considered to be translating riddle into riddle with the different question and different answer. The result of the analysis on the accuracy of the translations in book 1 shows that there are 3 data (25%) considered to be accurate, 3 data (25%) are less accurate, and 6 data (50%) are inaccurate. In book 2, there are 3 data (25%) considered to be accurate translation, 2 data (16.66%) are less accurate, and 7 data (58.33%) are inaccurate. It means that most of the translations of riddles in book 1 and book 2 tend to be inaccurate. The result of type of riddle in accurate translations in book 1 is syntactic riddle and the result of type of riddle in accurate translations in book 2 is also syntactic riddle. The technique results in accurate translations in book 1 is translating riddle into riddle with the same question and same answer, and in book 2 is translating riddle into riddle with the same question and same answer. The technique results in inaccurate translations in book 1 is translating riddle into riddle with the different question and
different answer, and in book 2 is translating riddle into riddle with the different question and different answer. The result of the analysis on the readability of the translations in book 1 shows that there are 6 data (50%) considered to be readable, 4 data (33.33%) are less readable, and 2 data (16.66%) are unreadable. In book 2, there are 4 data (41.66%) considered to be readable, 6 data (50%) are less readable, and 2 data (16.66%) are unreadable. It means that most of the translations of riddles in book 1 and book 2 tend to be less readable. The result of type of riddle in readable translations in book 1 is syntactic riddle and the result of type of riddle in readable translations in book 2 is also syntactic riddle. The technique results in readable translations in book 1 is translating riddle into riddle with the different question and different answer, and in book 2 is translating riddle into riddle with the same question and same answer. The technique results in less readable translations in book 1 is translating riddle into riddle with the same question and same answer, and in book 2 is translating riddle into riddle with the different question and different answer.
