Improving Students Speaking Skill By Using Movies (An Action Research at the Tenth Grade of RSBI Students at SMA Negeri 1 Kudus in the Academic Year 2010/2011)

Thesis, Surakarta: Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, 2011. This research is a classroom action research. It is aimed at finding out whether or not movies can improve the students‟ speaking skill in speaking news item text and attitudes towards English lesson. The problems highlighted in the research are the students‟ low speaking skill and attitudes toward speaking lesson at the tenth grade of RSBI Students at SMA Negeri 1 Kudus in the academic year 2010/2011. This research was carried out in class X-7. The procedure of the research consists of planning, action, observation, reflection. In this study, the writer was the practitioner who implemented movies as teaching media in the teaching and learning process. The data were in the form of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were taken from the test conducted before and after the actions. The qualitative data were taken from the result of observation, interview, researcher diaries and documents. The qualitative data were analyzed using the method stated by Burns (1999: 156) which consists of five steps: assembling the data, coding, comparing, building interpretations, and finally reporting the outcomes. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistic From the result of the research, the study found that movies can improve students‟ speaking skill and students‟ attitude in learning news item text. It could be seen on students‟ performance during teaching and learning process. Students became more active and all students were involved in teaching learning process. The class became more conducive, so the students were more enthusiastic in joining the lesson. There was improvement in students‟ achievement. The mean score in pre-test 5.12 increased into 6.44 in the post-test 1, and 7.82 in post-test 2. Thus, the result of the research showed that movies can improve students‟ speaking skill and students‟ attitude in learning news item text and it becomes one of appropriate ways in teaching speaking. ii
