Hanif Damayanti. C0307029. 2011. Conjunctive Relation Analysis on Texts Exposing Indonesian National Soccer of Opinion Column and Your Letters Column in The Jakarta Post: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Approach. English Department. Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts. Sebelas Maret University.
This is a qualitative descriptive and comparative research on Conjunctive Relation (CR) used in the texts exposing the issue of Indonesian national soccer from two argumentative columns in The Jakarta Post based on Systemic Functional Linguistics approach. The objectives of the research are to analyze Conjunctive Relation, text structure, genre, and the reason behind the exploiting such CR and genre in the texts of Opinion Column and Your Letters Column.
The research was conducted by analyzing the data based on the forms and meanings of Conjunctive Relation, tabulating the amount of forms and meanings of CR to find the language style of the texts, then determining the structure of the texts built up from roles and functions of CR to diagnose the genre, and finally describing and explaining the reason behind the applying such CR and genre in the texts by relating to the contexts, the secondary data and the related theory.
The forms of Conjunctive Relation used in the texts are conjunction, continuative, and metaphor. The meanings of CR found in the texts are addition, comparison, time, and consequence. All forms and meanings of CR can function internally or externally. All selected texts from both columns have „spoken‟ in their language style. However, from the comparison between both columns, the language style of Opinion Column tends to be more „written‟ than Your Letters Column.
There is an existence of microgenre within macrogenre of the texts. Both texts of Opinion Column have discussion macrogenre with explanation and recount microgenre within. Instead of explanation and recount, Opinion Text 2 has hortatory exposition microgenre within. The text structure of Opinion Text 1 is an issue, argument for, argument against, and conclusion. While Opinion Text 2 consists of an issue, argument 1, argument 2, and recommendation, with hortatory exposition in its recommendation stage. Whereas both texts of Your Letters Column have different genre one another. Letter Text 1 employs exemplum macrogenre -consisting of abstract, orientation, incident, and interpretation- with exposition microgenre in its interpretation stage. Whereas Letter Text 2 applies analytical exposition with recount macrogenre therein. The text structure of it is the thesis, argument 1, argument 2, argument 3, and reiteration.
Both columns contain argumentative texts, consequently there are many internal CR. There are CR in adding, comparing, and ordering arguments and evidences in exposition and discussion genre, plus countering and concluding xvi
arguments in discussion genre. While the occurrence of story genre such as exemplum and recount within argumentative texts causes the employment of many external CR to add, compare, and order events in the texts.
The use of discussion macrogenre in Opinion Column realizes that the writers show their opinion towards the issue of Indonesian national soccer and give the way out to solve the problem related to the issue. In Opinion Text 1, the writer gives opinion in different sides point of view by explaining and recounting events to support his arguments. The use of explanation microgenre in discussion macrogenre functions to elaborate arguments in the text, while the use of recount microgenre is to prove the arguments. In Opinion Text 2, the writer expresses his views by explaining and recounting events as well, and gives suggestions to make national soccer better through hortatory exposition in its recommendation stage of discussion macrogenre. While Your Letters Column is different from Opinion Column. The use of exemplum macrogenre in the text 1 of Your Letters Column realizes that the writer protests or complains on the defeat of national soccer in final of AFF Cup 2010. The writer also gives evaluation and suggestion to national soccer team through exposition microgenre in interpretation stage of exemplum macrogenre. Finally, the use of analytical exposition in Letter Text 2 shows that the writer conveys his opinion about the national soccer to persuade the readers that there are the problems of national soccer that need to be solved.
Finally, having written this thesis, it is recommended to the readers to read more than one argumentative texts since they are written personally. The readers may read one text from Opinion Column but more than one text from Your Letters Column. Seeing that Your Letters Column tends to be more subjective than Opinion Column.
