Ani Fiani, S891002004: The Effectiveness of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) for Teaching Writing Viewed from Students’ Creativity (The Experimental Study at the Fourth Semester of STAIN Bengkulu in the Academic Year of 2010/2011). First Consultant: Dr. Ngadiso, M.Pd; Second Consultant: Dr. Sujoko, M.A, Thesis, English Department, Graduate School, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta, 2011. The main objectives of the research are to know whether: (1) CIRC is more effective than direct instruction to teach writing to the fourth semester students of STAIN Bengkulu in the Academic year of 2010/2011; (2) the fourth semester students who have high creativity have better writing skill than those who have low creativity; (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ creativity for teaching writing. The experimental method was employed in this study. The population of the research was the fourth semester students of the English Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah, STAIN Bengkulu in the Academic Year of 2010/2011. The sampling technique used was cluster sampling. The sample in this study was 44 students covering 22 students of C as the experimental class and 22 students of B as the control class. The research instruments consist of an adapted Munandar’s Verbal Creativity and Writing test about argumentative essay which designed by the researcher. Before the instruments of creativity were used, a try-out was done to know the validity and reliability of the instruments and to know the instruction of writing is readable or not so it was also tried-out. After treatment was given in nine meetings, the data were analyzed in terms of their frequency distribution, normality of the sample distribution, and data homogeneity and then used ANOVA test (Multifactor analysis of variance) and TUKEY test to test the research hypotheses. Referring the summary of ANOVA, it can be concluded that: (1) CIRC is more effective than direct instruction to teach writing in the fourth semester of STAIN Bengkulu in academic year of 2010/2011; (2) the students having high creativity have better writing skill than the students having low creativity; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and the students’ creativity for teaching writing. Based on research findings, it can be concluded that the use of Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) is effective for teaching writing for the fourth semester students of the English Department. To achieve the most optimum writing achievement, the students have to ask and discuss what they did not know to the peers and the teachers so that they can be easier when they solve the problem and write more in the form of argumentative essay based on the current issues.
