A Thesis Improving Students’ Speaking Skill Using Roundrobin Technique (A Classroom Action Research Conducted In The Second Grade Of Smp Negeri 1 Gondang For Academic Year Of 2010/2011)

This thesis is to find out whether the use of roundrobin technique can improve
the students’ speaking skill of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gondang in
the academic year of 2010/2011 and to know the classroom situation when applying
roundrobin technique in the teaching speaking of the second grade students of SMP
Negeri 1 Gondang in the academic year of 2010/2011.
The method used in this research is a classroom action research at the Junior
High School conducted by an English Teacher (Teacher YS) and the researcher. The
research is conducted in two cycles from March 16th until April 7th 2011 to the second
grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Gondang. The research data are collected using
observation, interview, questionnaire, photographs, audio recording, and tests (pretest
and post-test). The data are analyzed using the technique of analyzing the data
from Anne Burns (1999:157-160), includes, assembling the data, coding the data,
comparing the data, building interpretation, reporting the outcomes and descriptive
statistics.
The research findings prove that roundrobin can improve the students’
speaking skill and the classroom situation is more cooperative and communicative
when roundrobin is implemented in teaching speaking. The improvement of the
students’ speaking skill includes: 1) the students’ speaking difficulty in using
grammar decreased, 2) the students’ difficulty in pronouncing the English words
decreased, 3) the students’ vocabulary mastery increased, and 4) the students’
speaking fluency improved. Besides, the improvement of the students’ speaking skill
can be seen from the improvement of the mean score of pre-test, first post- test and
second post-test, that is 4.47, 5.8, and 7.01. The classroom situation is also more
cooperative and communicative. It can be seen from the several improvement such
as: 1) all of the students got chances to practice speaking and they used it to speak up,
2) all of the students showed the participation and also more active in speaking class,
3) all of the students paid more attention to the researcher and did not do the
nonacademic activities, 4) the students were more cooperative and communicative
during the speaking class, and 5) most of the students were more confident, less
nervous, less afraid of making mistakes and less nervous.
Roundrobin technique can be applied in teaching learning process. Hopefully,
by applying roundrobin technique, the students can improve their speaking skill. The
researcher hopes that what the researcher had done will give the English teachers
inspiration to conduct roundrobin technique in their classroom.
