This research is based on Socio-Pragmatics study. The aims of the study are: (1) to describe the types of request expressions employed in the film entitled The Curious Case of Benyamin Button. (2) to describe how each type of request expression is applied in the film. (3) to describe the factors that influence the use of each type of request expression in the film. This research is a descriptive study. The data are all utterances of request expressions in the film The Curious Case of Benyamin Button. Then, each type of request expression that is applied in the film is analyzed by using Ethnography of Communication with SPEAKING formula and Politeness Theory as the guiding theory. Furthermore, Holmes’ Social Dimension of Communication is used to reveal the factors that influence the choice of request expressions in the conversations. The result of this research can be seen as follows: - First, there are five types of request expressions in the film namely offer, request for action, permission, proposal and invitation. - Second, it is also found in some data thatdirect request expression or less polite request expressions are employed by intimate participants in informal situations. In addition, indirect request expressions with greater politeness are commonly found in formal situation with distant participants. - Third, most request expressions are influenced by some factors, such as the situation when the conversations occur and the relationship between the participants. In offer, if the participantsin the dialog are intimate and involve in informal situation, they will apply direct offer expressions. Meanwhile, indirect offer expressions are applied in formal situation between distant relationships. The next factor is the participant’s relationship, the situation when the conversations happen and the purpose or the ends of the conversations. The other factor is the participant’s relationship and the situation when the dialogs take place. The last factor is the purpose or the ends of the conversation. Hopefully, the researcher hopes that this research can be used as a reference to study about request expressions instead of English Grammar Books since this research is taken from Western movie as the reflection of Western society.
