Contrastive analysis of prepositions in english and arabic

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the similarities and differences between English and Arabic prepositions, and how to utilize them in language teaching. The researcher took the data from English and Arabic books, and Holy Qur’an. To conduct the research, the researcher used a qualitative method, involving descriptive and content analysis. The result of the research shows that English and Arabic prepositions have both similarities and differences. The similarities are: 1) English and Arabic prepositions are used before noun to show place, position and time, 2) both English and Arabic prepositions must be put after comparative degree, 3) they are used after intransitive verbs . The differences are: 1) 1. In Arabic, the noun coming after a preposition (حرف الجر) gets Kasra (كسرة) as its final ‘vowel mark’ but not in English. 2) English prepositions are always separable but Arabic prepositions can be inseparable. 3). English prepositions are various and Arabic prepositions are limited. 4) Some of English verbs need a preposition but not in Arabic. 5) Some of verbs and sentences in English don’t need a preposition but they need in Arabic. English teachers at pesantren (Islamic boarding school) should be attentive on the similarities and differences between English and Arabic prepositions. They should give the remedial teaching in teaching some verbs followed by a preposition and also explain the differences among at, in and on
