This research is aimed at finding out whether: (1) GRASP method is more effective than Direct Instruction method to teach reading at the First Grade Students of SMK Negeri 1 Mlarak, Ponorogo in the Academic Year of 2011/2012; (2) the students who have high self-esteem have better reading comprehension than those who have low self-esteem at the First Grade Students of SMK Negeri 1 Mlarak, Ponorogo in the Academic Year of 2011/2012; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ self-esteem in teaching reading at the First Grade Students of SMK Negeri 1 Mlarak, Ponorogo in the Academic Year of 2011/2012. The method applied in this research was experimental study. It was conducted at the first grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Mlarak, Ponorogo. The population of the research is the first grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Mlarak, Ponorogo in the academic year of 2011/2012. The samples were two classes. In taking the sample, a cluster random sampling was used. Each class was divided into two groups (the students who have high and low self-esteem). Then, the techniques which were used to collect the data were a questionnaire for getting the data of the students’ self-esteem and a multiple choice test for getting the data of the students’ reading comprehension. The two instruments were tried out to get the valid and reliable items. The data were analyzed by using multifactor analysis of ANOVA 2 x 2 and Tukey test. Before conducting the ANOVA test, normality and homogeneity test were conducted. Based on the results of the analysis, by using ANOVA and Tukey test, there are some research findings; (1) there is a significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension between those who are taught using GRASP method and those who are taught using Direct Instruction method, and GRASP method is more effective than Direct Instruction method to teach reading; (2) there is a significant difference on the students’ reading comprehension between those who have high and low self-esteem, and the students who have high self-esteem have better reading comprehension than those who have low self-esteem, and (3) there is an interaction between the teaching methods and the students’ self-esteem in teaching reading, in which GRASP method is more effective for the students who have high self-esteem and Direct Instruction method is more effective for the students who have low self-esteem. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that GRASP method is proved as a method which is effective to teach reading and the level of the students’ self-esteem also influences the effectiveness of GRASP method in teaching reading at the first grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Mlarak, Ponorogo in the academic year of 2011/2012. Hopefully, the research findings can be beneficial for teachers in determining and selecting the teaching method for their students, particularly in teaching reading. The teachers should be creative in exploring GRASP method in teaching reading and the students are expected to always improve their competency in reading. Finally, it is hoped that this thesis can increase the teachers’ knowledge dealing with the use of the teaching method especially in teaching reading.
