Optimizing The Application Of You Tube Videos To Improve Students’ Speaking Skill In Using Language Function (An Action Research Study At The 10th Grade Of Automotive Program In Smk N 2 Wonogiri 2010/2011)

This thesis is written to 1) identify whether and to what extent You Tube Videos (YTV) improves students’ speaking skill in using language function and 2) describe class climate when YTV is applied in the English class. The method used in this research was collaborative action research between (Teacher T) the Vocational High School English Teacher and the researcher. The research was conducted in two cycles from August 25th until December 30th 2011 at the tenth grade of SMKN 2 Wonogiri. The research data were collected by using techniques of qualitative and quantitative data collection which include: observation, interview, journal or diaries, document analysis, and test. The qualitative data were analyzed through constant comparative method and the statistic data were analyzed through T-test by calculated the students’ score calculation, mean of pre test and post test. The research findings showed that YTV in teaching and learning English could improve the students’ speaking skill and the classroom climate of teaching and learning the language function. The Improvement of students’ speaking skill showed: (1) most students pronounced the English words correctly; (2) most students used English words; (3) the students eliminated many ungrammatical utterances; (4) the students’ speech was quite fluent; (5) most students’ content of speech was understandable. The improvement of classroom climate category showed dealing with a low of the students’ speaking skill are: (1) the students were not noisy in the teaching and learning (TL) English in the classroom; (2) the students encourage to use English in TL English; (3) the students did the homework; (4) the students paid more attention toward the lesson; (5) the students were not quite silent if they are asked to speak English in front of the class. In addition the result of pre test of speaking test was 51.52. The speaking test result improved in post test 1 and post test 2. It was 55.2 in post test 1 and 75.08 in post test 2. The students’ passing grade (KKM) is 75. Beside the improvement of the students’ score, the students did some activities who did not they do before using YTV: 1) they did various activities and various exercises during TL using YTV; 2) they could interact with their friends and collaborate with them during TL English; and 3) they could be responsible to their jobs after TL using YTV. From the result of the application of YTV shows that YTV is suitable for supporting and improving students’ speaking skill. YTV can be used by other English teachers to teach speaking. The researcher hopes the other English teachers apply it in their speaking class.
