The objectives of the research are to find out: (1) Whether Question and Answer Realationships method is more effective than Direct Instruction Method in teaching reading; (2) Whether the students with high intelligence have better comprehension in reading than the students with low intelligence; and (3) Whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and the students’ intelligence in teaching reading. The research was carried out at SMPN 2 Madiun, from August up to October 2011. The research method used was experimental. The population was the second year students of SMPN 2 Madiun in the academic year of 2011/2012. The sample was taken with the cluster random sampling. They were experimental class (VIII-F) and control class (VIII-D) consisting of 60 students equally distributed into four groups. The techniques of collecting data were a non-test (a document of the students’ intelligence quotient) and a test (reading test). The reading test consisted of 50 items with four options each. The instrument was valid and reliable after being tried out. The data of the result of the reading test were analyzed by multifactor analysis of variance (ANOVA) 2 x 2. Before conducting the ANOVA test, normality test and homogeneity test were conducted. Then, it was analyzed by using Tukey test. Based on the result of inferential analysis of the data, there are research findings that can be drawn. First, Question and Answer Relationships is more effective than Direct Instruction for teaching reading. Second, the students having high intelligence have better reading comprehension than those having low intelligence. Third, there is an interaction between teaching methods and the degree of intelligence because Question and Answer Relationships is more effective for the students having high intelligence, and Direct Instruction is more effective for the students having low intelligence in teaching reading. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that QAR is an effective method for teaching reading. The effectiveness of the method depends on the degree of intelligence. Therefore, the teachers should apply QAR in teaching reading. Keywords: Question and Answer Relationships, Direct Instruction, and intelligence
