The Influence of Shared Reading Methoda Reading Anxiety Upon Student’s Reading Competence (An Experimental Research at the Tenth Grade Students of SMKN 3 SURAKARTA in Academic Year of 2011/2012)

The objectives of the research are: (1) To identify whether in general, Shared Reading Method is more effective than Direct Instruction; (2) To identify whether the students having low level of reading anxiety have better reading ability than those with high level of reading anxiety; and (3) To identify whether there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ reading anxiety.
The research was carried out at SMKN 3 Surakarta, from April 2012 to June 2012. The research method was experimental. The subject of the research is the tenth grade students of X PM 2 and the tenth grade students of X PM 3. Each of them consists of 30 students. The tenth grade students of X PM 3 are as experimental class who were taught using Shared Reading Method and the tenth grade students of X PM 2 are as control class who were taught using Direct Instruction Method. The data were in the form of quantitative data and they were taken from a test. They are the scores of students’ reading test after having twelve times treatment for each class. The researcher analyzed the data using ANOVA or analysis of variance and Tukey test.
Based on the result of data analysis, the research findings are: (1) It means that Shared Reading Method is more effective than Direct Instruction Method to teach reading; (2) It can be concluded that H0B is rejected and H1B is accepted. It means that the students having low reading anxiety have better competence in reading from those having high reading anxiety in their reading ability. (3) It can be concluded that there is interaction effect between teaching methods and students’ reading anxiety. It means that shared reading method is suitable for the students having low anxiety and direct instruction method is suitable for students having high anxiety.
The result of study implies that: (1) English teachers should choose the appropriate teaching method based on student’s characteristic (2) Shared reading method is suitable for the students having low anxiety
