The Use Of Jigsaw Learning Technique To Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension (A Classroom Action Research at the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA N 2 Boyolali in the Academic Year of 2010/2011)

The objectives of this research are: (1) to identify whether Jigsaw learning technique can improve students’ reading comprehension; (2) to know what happens in the class when the teacher implements Jigsaw learning technique to teach reading comprehension. Then, all the objectives lead to main objective of the study that is to improve the students’ reading skill. The writer conducted a classroom action from November to August 2011 at class XI IPA 2 SMA N 2 Boyolali. The action research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of four steps: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. In collecting the data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative method. In qualitative method, the researcher used observational and non observational technique. The observational technique was obtained by making field notes, photographs and non- observational technique was obtained from interviews and documents. The collecting of the quantitative data was conducted through the test. The researcher finds two improvements: First, the students’ reading skill had been improved after the implementation of jigsaw learning technique. It is proved by the improvement of the students’ reading score. Second, the improvement of the class situation in teaching learning process. The researcher found that jigsaw learning technique improved the students’motivation in learning and made the students more enthusiastic, interested and active to learn reading. The result of the research implies that jigsaw learning technique is the appropriate technique to improve the students’ motivation in English teaching learning process.
