Improving Students’ Writing Ability on Narrative Text Using Video (An Action Research at the Second Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak Boyolali in the Academic Year 2011/2012)

The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify whether and to what extent the use of videos can improve the students’ ability in writing narrative text; and (2) to describe what happens to the class climate when videos are implemented in the writing class. The research is carried out at SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak. It was conducted from September 2012 up to May 2012. The subject of the research is the students of class XI IA 1 of SMA Negeri 1 Ngemplak in the academic year of 2011/2012. The research is conducted in two cycles, four meetings for each cycle. Every cycle consisted of four steps; planning, implementing, evaluation, and reflection. It optimized the use of videos as the media for teaching writing. In collecting the data, the researcher used two kinds of data; qualitative data and quantitative data. The qualitative data are collected through observation, interview, and questionnaire. The quantitative data are collected using test. The qualitative data are analyzed using constant comparative method and the quantitative data are analyzed through statistic technique for comparing the pre-test, post test 1, and post test 2. The researcher analyzed the mean score of each test to find out the improvements of students’ writing narrative text skill after the action was conducted. The research findings show that the use of videos can improve students’ writing skill and class climate. The improvement of students’ writing skill include: (1) students explore their ideas easily; (2) the students organized their ideas coherently using appropriate generic structure of narrative text; with systematically; (3) the students used appropriate vocabulary in writing narrative text; (4) the students write their narrative text in grammatically correct sentences; (5) the students used capitals and punctuations correctly in their composition. The class climate also improves including: (1) students’ are active; they pay attention to the teacher’s explanation; (2) the students are interested and motivated in writing class, they do not do their personal activity; (3) the students can finish the writing assignment during the lesson; (4) they do all exercises given by the teacher; and (5). students give more responses when the teacher gives instruction to do the task in front of the classroom. Furthermore, the students mean scores also improve, which can be seen from their writing mean score of pre-test 66.05 increased to 71.41 in post-test 1, and 75.05 in post-test 2 the last mean score is higher than KKM which is 72.00. Finally, it can be concluded that the use of videos can improve the students’ writing skill in narrative text and the class climate.
