Improving Students’ Ability In Writing Descriptive Text Using Youtube Videos (A Classroom Action Research at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri Gondangrejo in the academic Year of 2011/2012)

The objectives of the research are: (1) to identify whether and to what
extent the use of YouTube videos improve the students’ ability in writing
descriptive text; and (2) to describe the class climate when YouTube videos are
implemented in the writing class.
The research is carried out at SMA Negeri Gondangrejo. It is conducted
from January 2012 up to March 2012. The subject of the research is the students
of class X5 of SMA Negeri Gondangrejo in the academic year of 2011/2012. The
research is conducted in two cycles, in which in the first cycle there are four
meetings and three meetings in the second cycle. It is optimized the used of
YouTube videos as the media for teaching writing.
There are two kinds of data; qualitative data and quantitative data. The
qualitative data are collected through observation, interview, and questionnaire.
The quantitative data are collected using test. The qualitative data are analyzed
through constant comparative method (CCM) including comparing incidents
applicable to each category, integrating category and their properties, delimiting
the theory and construct the theory. The quantitative data are analyzed through
descriptive statistic technique including pretest, test in cycle 1, and post test.
The research findings show that the use of YouTube video can improve
students’ writing skill and class climate. The improvement of students’ writing
skill include: (1) students explore their ideas easily, they added more details
description on their writing; (2) the students organized their ideas coherently
using appropriate generic structure of descriptive; (3) the students used more
appropriate word forms; they did not interchange the use of adverbs and
adjectives anymore; (4) the students wrote their descriptive in grammatically
correct sentences; (5) the students used capitals and punctuations correctly in
their composition. The class climate also improve include: (1) students’ are active
and creative, they pay attention to the teacher’s explanation; (2) the students are
interested in writing class, they don’t do their personal business; (3) the students
can finish the writing assignment during the lesson ; (4) they do all exercises
which is given by the teacher; and (5). students give more responses when the
teacher asks them to do the task in front of the classroom. In addition, the students
mean score were also improve which can be seen from their writing mean score of
pre-test, post test in cycle 1, and cycle 2, that is 66.04, 70.64, and 75.68. the last
mean score is higher than KKM which is 75.00.
Finally, it can be concluded that the use of YouTube videos can improve
the students’ writing skill and the class climate.
