The Effectiveness of Team Assisted Individualization to Teach Reading Viewed from Students’ Interest (An Experimental Research in the Second Grade Students of English Teaching Department of IKIP PGRI Madiun in the Academic Year of 2011/2012)

ABSTRACT Team Assisted Individualization is a cooperative learning method and it combines the cooperative learning teams with individual instruction to teach reading. This reserach was conducted with the objectives to prove whether (1)Team Assisted Individualization is more effective than Direct Instructional Method to teach reading; (2) the students having high interest have better reading skill than those having low interest; (3) there is any interaction between teaching methods and students’ interest to teach reading. The research was conducted at the second grade of English Teaching Department Madiun in the academic year of 2011/2012. The research method was quasi experimental research. The population in this research was the second grade students of English Teaching Department Madiun. The writer used cluster random sampling to get the sample. The sample consists of 60 students which are divided into two classes, II E consisting 30 students as a control class and II F consisting 30 students as an experimental class. The instruments used to collect the data were reading test to get the score of reading skill and questionnaire to get the score of students’ interest. Before the instruments were used, the tryout was done to know the validity and reliability of instruments. The writer analyzed the data in term of their frequency distribution, normality, and homogeneity. Then, the data were analyzed by using multifactoral analysis 2X2, then followed by Tukey test. The findings in this research lead to some conclusions: (1) TAI is more effective than DIM for teaching reading; (2) The students having high interest have better reading skill than the students having low interest; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ interest for teaching reading. TAI is suitable for students having high interest and DIM is suitable for students having low interest. therefore TAI is an effective method to teach reading for the second grade students of English teaching department Madiun. Finnaly, the research findings imply that the use of TAI can improve the student’s reading competence. The evidence in this research indicate that the students taught using TAI have better reading competence that those taught using DIM. Therefore, it is recommended for English teaching teacher to apply TAI in the reading class. Key word: Teaching reading, TAI, DIM, Students’ interest
