A Correlation between Learning Motivation and Vocabulary Mastery and Reading Competence of The Second Grade Students of SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta in the Academic Year 2011-2012

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is: (1) To find out whether there is any
correlation between learning motivation and reading competence of the second
grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta academic year 2011-2012, (2) To find
out whether there is any correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading
competence of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta academic
year 2011-2012, and (3) To find out whether there is any correlation between
learning motivation and vocabulary mastery simultaneously and reading
competence of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta academic
year 2011-2012.
The research is carried out at SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta. The research is
conducted in four months from January up to April 2012. The population of this
research is the second grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta in the academic
year 2011-2012. Since the result of the study must be representative, the
researcher used 50 % of the population or 4 classes. The data of the research is
collected using questionnaire and test. The questionnaire is used to collect the data
of students’ learning motivation, while the test is used to collect the data of
vocabulary mastery and the data of students’ reading competence. The data gained
from questionnaire and reading test is then being analyzed using simple
correlation and multiple linear regression.
Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that: (1) There is
significant positive correlation between learning motivation and reading
competence of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta in the
academic year 2011-2012 (ry1 = 0.735 > r-table = 0.206). It means that reading
competence will follow the increase or the decrease of learning motivation, (2)
There is significant positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading
competence of the second grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta in the
academic year 2011-2012 (0.710 > 0.206). It means that reading competence will
follow the increase or the decrease of vocabulary mastery, and (3) There is a
significant positive correlation between learning motivation and vocabulary
mastery simultaneously and reading competence of the second grade students of
SMP Negeri 4 Surakarta in the academic year 2011-2012 (F-observation = 91.931
> F-table = 3.11). It means that reading competence will simultaneously follow
the increase and decrease of learning motivation and vocabulary mastery.
Therefore, the students’ learning motivation and vocabulary mastery should be
maintained and elevated in increasing reading competence.
