Improving Students’ Writing Skill Through Guided Writing (a Classroom Action Research at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA N 2 Boyolali in the Academic Year of 2011/2012)

This thesis is written based on the research that had been done by the writer as an English teacher in SMA N 2 Boyolali. This thesis aims to (1) describe whether guided writing can improve writing skill of class X2 students at SMA N 2 Boyolali in the academic year of 2011/2012; and (2) describe the class situation when guided writing is implemented in the writing class. The method used in this research is collaborative action research. It was conducted with the English teacher of SMA N 2 Boyolali (teacher PR). It was done in one cycle that consists of four meetings due to the time limitedness. The cycle consists of four steps: planning, action, observing, and reflecting. The data of this thesis were in the form of qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were collected through interview, observation, questionnaire, and documentation. The quantitative data were collected through a test. The qualitative data were analyzed through assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretation, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistics. The research findings showed that guided writing could (1) improve students’ writing skill and (2) improve class situation. Related to the improvement of students’ writing skill, it includes: (a) The students found it easier to develop the idea, it relates to the first step, model paragraph (b) The students found it easier to organize their sentences to make a good paragraph, it relates to the second step, comprehension questions (c) The students found it easier to choose the vocabulary (d) They made fewer mistakes in mechanics, this is related to the step of language based exercises and oral composition (e) Their mistakes in grammar reduced, it relates to the step of written composition. Related to the improvement of class situation, it includes (a) The students enjoyed the teaching and learning process, (b) The students were happy to get the teacher’s explanation, (c) They were more active. From those findings, it can be concluded that guided writing can improve both students writing skill and class situation. Based on the findings above, the writer suggests that guided writing should be implemented in a good planning. It means that the teacher should optimize the use of guided writing as well as the teaching and learning process. Guided writing for improving students’ writing skill is useful since it can bring a great result.
