The use of english in teaching and learning activities at a designed international standardized elementary school (a naturalistic inquiry in sd negeri jaten 3 karanganyar in the academic year 2011/2012)

and (3) The benefits and challenges in using English as an instructional language
in teaching and learning activities in this school.
The method used in this research is naturalistic inquiry. The research was
conducted in the fourth grade of SD Negeri Jaten 3 Karanganyar. The sources of
the data in this research include events, informants, and documents. The data were
collected through interview, observation and document analysis. The researcher
took trustworthiness that is triangulation to check the data. The data sources of
triangulation are the Chief Management of RSBI and some students of the fourth
grade of SD Negeri Jaten 3 Karanganyar. The techniques of triangulation used by
the researcher are interview, questionnaires, observation, and document analysis.
The data were analyzed by using interactive model of analysis involving
collecting the data, reducing the data, and presenting the data and also drawing
conclusion.
Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that: (1) The use
of English in teaching and learning activities in SD Negeri Jaten 3 Karanganyar is
fairly well conducted; (2) English and Indonesian language are applied in the
planning, implementation and assessment stages; (3)The communication during
the lesson takes place bilingually; (4) Both the teacher and the students have their
own important roles in the process of teaching and learning; and (5) There are
some benefits and challenges faced by the school in using English as an
instructional language.
At the end of the research, the researcher suggests that the school, the
teachers and students make the use of English in teaching and learning activities
improve well: (1) SD Negeri Jaten 3 should encourage all of the school members
to use English more often and not only in the teaching and learning activities in
the classroom; (2) Besides focusing more on the concept of material being taught,
teachers should focus on the language used by the students during teaching and
learning activities; (3) Again, the teachers should enrich themselves with various
types of learning sources and methods. They should optimize the facilities and
basic facilities provided by the school in order to attract students’ motivation; and
(4) the students should be more active in teaching and learning activity, not be
afraid of having communication using English, and realize that learning by using
English is enjoyable and fun so they can increase their motivation.
