The Effectiveness Of Collaborative Strategic Reading (Csr) To Teach Reading Viewed From Students’ Self-Esteem

(An Experimental Study at the Second Grade Students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the Academic Year of 2011/2012). Thesis. This research is intended to know whether; (1) Collaborative Strategic Reading is more effective than Direct Instruction Method to teach reading; (2) Students who have high selfesteem have better reading skill than students who have low self-esteem; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ self-esteem in teaching reading. The research was carried out at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the 2011/2012 Academic Year. The population was the XI students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo in the 2011/2012 Academic Year. It consists of eight classes (255 students). The research used cluster random sampling to get the sample. It consists of two classes: (1) 32 students of Science 1 Class, and (2) 32 students of Science 2 Class. The research was an experimental study. There are two instruments in the form of test for collecting data: (1) 40 items of self-esteem questionnaire and (2) 40 items of reading test. The two instruments were valid and reliable after both were tried out to the XII Science 2 Class. The data were the result of reading test and analyzed by multifactor analysis of variance 2 x 2 (ANOVA). Then, it was analyzed by using Tukey test. Based on the result of inferential analysis of the data, this research comes to some findings: (1) Collaborative Strategic Reading is more effective than Direct Instruction Method for teaching reading to the second grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 in the 2011/2012 academic year; (2) The students who have high self-esteem have better reading skill than the students who have low self-esteem of the second grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 in the 2011/2012 academic year; and (3) There is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ self-esteem in teaching reading to the second grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 in the 2011/2012 academic year. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that: (1) Collaborative Strategic Reading is a very effective method for teaching reading to the second grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 in the 2011/2012 academic year; and (2) The effectiveness of the method is influenced by the level of the students’ self-esteem. Hopefully, the result of this research will be useful for teachers in order to choose and determine the suitable teaching method used in their class.
