The Implementation Of The Genre Based Approach In Sma Negeri 1 Manyaran ( A Descriptive Qualitative Study At Sma Negeri I Manyaran Wonogiri Regency In The 2012/2013academic Year)

The research is a qualitative study. The objectives of the research are (1) to
know how much the teachers in SMA Negeri 1 Manyaran understand about the
implementation of the genre based approach, (2) to know what is the teachers’
attitude to the implementation of the genre based approach, (3) to find out how the
syllabus and lesson plan have been developed, and (4) to know what are the
problems faced by the teachers in implementing the genre based approach.
The research was conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Manyaran, that is located in
Jln Manyaran – Wonogiri, Bero, Manyaran. The data were collected through
interview, classroom observation, and document analysis. In analyzing the data
the writer used interactive model analysis including reducing the data, presenting
the data and drawing conclusion.
The result of the study shows that theoretically the teachers in SMA
Negeri 1 Manyaran understand enough about the implementation of the genre
based approach. It can be seen from their answer to the researcher’s question
about the implementation of the genre based approach. But the teachers did not
implement the techniques in the genre based approach appropriately. The teachers
in this school actually agree and support the implementation of the genre based
approach, because it enables students to apply their knowledge in English in real
communication. The syllabi and lesson plans have been developed by the teachers
in this school through the training and instruction that have been given by the
minister of education. There was no examiner who evaluates the process of the
development of syllabus and lesson plan and also evaluates the result of them. The
evaluation of the syllabus and lesson plan was done by the supervisor if the
certain teachers got promotion or in the process of accreditation. The problem in
implementing the genre based approach according to the teachers came from the
students, the students’ low competence and motivation. Besides that, the school
has to follow the prescribed curriculum. The teaching learning activities was
aimed to make students ready to face the examination.
Based on the result of study above, it can be concluded that they teachers
understand enough about the implementation of the genre based approach, but the
implementation in this school has not been done perfectly because of some
problems. The teachers should use the steps in curriculum cycle in the genre based
approach besides preparing students to meet the examination, because they also
need to implement their knowledge in English in the communication. For
students, they have to improve their English outside classroom by doing
interesting activities, such as listening to the English songs, watching English
movies, reading English novel or article, etcetera.
