An Analysis of Translation Variety of Simple Preposition Meanings In The Novel “The Summons” by John Grisham And Its Translation “Panggilan” by Hidayat Saleh

ABSTRAK
2007. This research focuses o n the variety meanings of simple preposition and its function in the novel “The Summons” and find out whether the sentences which contain simple preposition meanings are accurate. It is descriptive method using the technique of collecting, classifying the data and drawing conclusion based o n the data analysis.
There are two kinds of data the primary and secondary data. The primary data are taken from the novel “The Summons” and its translation “Panggilan”. The secondary data is the result of the questionnaire of accuracy from three respondents who have knowledge about translation.
The samples of the data are all sentences which contain five simple prepositions occurring more than four times. In this research, purposive sampling was employed and there were 356 data. Based o n the data analysis, the researcher analyzes five simple prepositions: for, from, in, to, and with. Each preposition has many kinds of meanings. Preposition For: untuk, sudah, selama, karena, bagi, atas, and menuju. Preposition From : dari, di and akibat. Preposition In: dalam, di, pada, di dalam, ke, dari dalam, untuk menangani, sampai, sudah, dengan cara, dengan, secara, tentang yang, and isi.
Preposition To: di, dalam, karena, menjadi, terarah menuju, bagi, untuk, ke, kepada, pada, dengan, and atas nama. Preposition With: dengan and sambil memperlihatkan. The function of preposition existing in the prepositional phrase function as markers of: place, direction, purpose, cause or reason, time, duration of time, temporal time, manner, method, source, reference, description, intended recipient, recipient, accompaniment, association, and instrument. Based o n the questionnaire of accuracy, most of the data (164data or 44,94%) are considered very accurate, 157 data or 44,10% are considered accurate. 34 data or 9,5% are considered less accurate and o nly o ne data considered inaccurate. It is concluded that the translation is very accurate for the target readers.
