An Analysis Of Flouting Maxims In “Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince” Film Based On Pragmatics Approach

This research was conducted to describe the kinds of flouting maxims employed by the characters in the film entitled “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and to explain the reasons of the characters in the film in employing flouting maxims in their dialogues using Pragmatics approach. This research was a descriptive qualitative and used total sampling technique. The data of this research were dialogues containing flouting maxims that were uttered by the characters in the film. They were classified based on Grice’s Theory of Flouting Maxims. The researcher found that firstly, there are thirteen results and four kinds of flouting maxims uttered by the characters in the film, such as three flouting a clash between maxims that can be divided into two groups, they are 2 (15.4%) flouting a clash between Maxims of Quantity and Relevance and 1 (7.7%) flouting a clash between Maxims of Quality and Relevance; 2 (15.4%) flouting the Maxims of Quantity; 6 (46.1%) flouting the Maxims of Relevance; and 2 (15.4%) flouting the Maxims of Manner. Secondly, the reasons of the characters in the film in employing flouting maxims in their dialogues are: privacy and profession reasons are used to flout a clash between Maxims of Quality and Relevance; privacy reason is used to flout a clash between Maxims of Quality and Relevance; confirmation and refusal reasons are used to flout the Maxims of Quantity; safety, education, anger, jealousy and privacy reasons are used to flout the Maxims of Relevance; empathy and love reasons are used to flout the Maxims of Manner.
