Improving Students’ Reading Skill Through Numbered Heads Together (Nht) Technique (A Classroom Action Research at the Second Grade of SMP Purnama 2 Surakarta in the Academic Year of 2011/2012)

This thesis is written to: (1) identify whether the use of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) can improve students’reading skill’, and (2) describe the class situation when the teacher implements Numbered Heads Together (NHT) in reading activity. The research was conducted from March 15th 2012 until July 5th 2012 at the eight grade of SMP Purnama 2 Surakarta. The research was conducted in two cycles, in which in the first cycle there were three meetings and in the second cycle there were three meetings. Every cycle consisted of four steps: planning, implementing, observation, and reflection. The research data were collected by using techniques of qualitative and quantitative method. The qualitative method consisted of observation, questionnaire, field notes, and interview. Meanwhile, the technique of collecting data using quantitative method was a test. The qualitative data were analyzed in five stages consisting of assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The quantitative data were analyzed by comparing the mean scores of the pre-test and the post-test. The results of the research show that NHT technique is able to improve both students’ reading skill and class situation. The students get improvement in reading scores from pre-test to post test 2. Students’ ability in finding out all reading indicators including main idea, stated detail information, implied information, meaning word based on the context, reference, and purpose of text improved. In addition, the improvement of the class situation includes: (1) Students’ motivation improved; (2) Students are willing to speak English in the classroom and they had high confidence when speak in English; (3) Students tend
