The objectives of this research are to ascertain whether: (1) Teams-Games-Tournament (TGT) is more effective than lecturing to teach speaking at the Tenth Graders of SMK Batik 1 Surakarta in the Academic Year of 2012/2013; (2) the students who have high self-esteem have better speaking ability than those who have low self-esteem at the Tenth Graders of SMK Batik 1 Surakarta in the Academic Year of 2012/2013; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching methods and students’ self-esteem in teaching speaking at the Tenth Graders of SMK Batik 1 Surakarta in the Academic Year of 2012/2013. This research was experimental study and the population of the research was the tenth graders of SMK Batik 1 Surakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013. The samples were: (1) 38 students from X AP 1; and (2) 38 students from X AP 2. In determining the sample, the researcher took the sample of this study by using cluster random sampling. Each class was divided into two groups (the students who have high and low self-esteem). The research instruments consist of the students’ self-esteem questionnaire and speaking test. The two instruments were tried out to get valid and reliable items. Then, the data were analyzed by using multifactor analysis of variance 2 x 2 (ANOVA) and Tukey test. Based on the research result, there are three findings as follows: (1) the students who are taught using Teams-Games-Tournament have better speaking ability than those who are taught using lecturing. In addition, the use of Teams-Games-Tournament is more effective than lecturing to teach speaking; (2) the students who have high self-esteem have better speaking ability than those who have low self-esteem; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching strategies and students self-esteem because Teams-Games-Tournament is more effective to teach speaking for the students having high self-esteem, and lecturing is more effective to teach speaking for students having low self-esteem. Finally, it can be concluded that: (1) Teams-Games-Tournament is an effective method to teach speaking at the tenth graders of SMK Batik 1 Surakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013; (2) the effectiveness of the strategy is affected by the level of students’ self-esteem. Hopefully, the research result of this research will be considered by an English teacher to select and determine an appropriate teaching method to teach speaking for the students who have high or low self-esteem.
