The Effectiveness of Using YouTube Video in Teaching English (An Experimental Research at the First Semester Students of English Education of Institut Agama Islam Negeri Raden Intan Lampung in the Academic Year of 2012/2013)

The research aims at finding out the effectiveness of teaching grammar through YouTube video whether (1) YouTube video is more effective than Textbook to teach grammar for the the first semester students of English Education of Institut Agama Islam Negeri Raden Intan Lampung in the Academic Year of 2012/2013; (2) students having positive attitude have better grammar achievement than those having negative attitude; and (3) there is an interaction achievement. The research was conducted at the institution, from the midle of October to December 2012.The population was all of the first semester students of English Education of Institut Agama Islam Negeri Raden Intan Lampung in the Academic Year of 2012/2013. Two out of five classes consisting of 36 students respectively were taken as the sample by applying cluster random sampling. The students of IE were treated as experimental class who were taught by using YouTube video and the students of IC were treated as control class who were taught by using textbooks. The instruments for collecting the data were a questionnaire on and a grammar test. Before the questionnaire and the grammar test were utilized, a tryout had been administered to know the validity of the items and the reliability of the two instruments. The data of grammar test were used to grammar skill. The data of Attitude questionaire were used to attitude. The data of grammar test were the scores of students rammar test that was administered after having eight times treatment for each class. The researcher analyzed the data using ANOVA or analysis of variance. Based on the result of data analysis, the research findings are: (1) YouTube video as media ( = 27,75) is more effective than textbooks ( =24,41) to teach grammar; (2) the students who have positive attitude have higher achievement ( =29,11) than those who have negative attitude ( =23,05); (3) Based on these research findings, it can be concluded that YouTube video as media is an effective tool to teach English grammar for the first semester students of English Education of Institut Agama Islam Negeri Raden Intan Lampung. There is an interaction between the teaching media and attitude for the teaching of grammar. From that result, YouTube can be implemented as one of the effective teaching media to teach grammar in order to get good achievement in grammar/ structure.
