The objectives of this research are to find out the correlation between (1) vocabulary mastery and speaking skill; (2) risk taking and speaking skill; and (3) vocabulary mastery, risk taking toward speaking skill. This researcher used quantitative method, it was correlational study. The study was carried out in December 2012 at SMA Negeri 1 Kartasura. The population was all the first grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kartasura which consists of nine classes. The total number of the students was 311 students. The sample was 30 students taken by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments in collecting the data were questionnaire, and test. The questionnaire was used to collect the data of risk taking; while the objective test was used to collect the data of vocabulary mastery; and the interview test was used to collect the data of speaking skill. The techniques which were used to analyze the data were Simple Correlation and Multiple Regression Correlation. The results of the data analysis show that in the level of significance α = 0.05 (1) there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill (rx1y = 0.98 >rt = 0.361); (2) there is a positive correlation between risk taking and speaking skill (rx2y = 0.425 >rt = 0.361); and (3) there is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery, risk taking, and speaking skill (Ry12 = 0.391 and Fo = 22.82> Ft = 3.33). Based on the result of the study, it is known that there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and speaking skill. There is a positive correlation between risk taking and speaking skill, and there is positive correlation between vocabulary mastery, risk taking simultaneously and speaking skill of the first grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kartasura in the academic year of 2012/2013. The result of this research shows that vocabulary mastery and risk taking are important factors that give contribution to speaking skill. Both vocabulary mastery and risk taking have positive contribution in speaking skill, it is 52.93%. So, vocabulary mastery and risk taking should be considered in improving speaking skill, although the factors are not only come from those variables.
